The study examined the impact of drug abuse on the socio-economic welfare of the youth in Mityana District. The
findings revealed that drug abuse among the youth in Mityana municipality is driven by several factors, including
high levels of unemployment, peer influence, and poor family backgrounds, alongside the nature of the community
in which these youths reside. The study also highlighted the severe effects of drug abuse on the mental well-being of
the youth, noting that alcohol and drug abuse are leading contributors to mental health issues such as depression,
developmental delays, and other psychosocial problems. Additionally, substance abuse among youth in Mityana was
found to contribute to physical health issues, including injuries from accidents (such as car accidents), physical
disabilities, and the health risks associated with drug overdoses. It was further noted that substance-abusing youth
often face alienation and stigma from their peers, exacerbating their social isolation. In terms of combating drug
abuse, the study identified several potential measures. These included the establishment of a drug abuse surveillance
system to assess the extent of the problem and guide national policy development. The research also emphasized the
importance of promoting positive attitudes among those affected by substance abuse, encouraging them to seek
professional care from health experts. Moreover, the study recommended an integrated approach involving both
state and non-state actors, including civil society organizations, to collectively combat drug abuse among the youth.
Drug abuse and addiction present significant challenges to the mental health and socio-economic welfare of the
youth in Mityana District. Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive efforts from both governmental and
non-governmental organizations. The study recommends the implementation of effective monitoring systems, public
