The Influence Of Irrigation Agriculture On Poverty Alleviation In Urban Centres, A Case Study Of Jinja North, Jinja City (Issue 12)
Irrigated agriculture has experienced significant growth globally, particularly in developing regions like Asia. Despite
substantial increases in irrigated areas and associated benefits, certain regions, notably in South Asia, continue to grapple
with low agricultural productivity and persistent rural poverty. This study focuses on the influence of irrigation on
poverty alleviation in urban centers, where agricultural productivity levels remain a critical factor in poverty reduction.
Through a comprehensive survey, the research explores the multifaceted role of irrigation, examining its impact on
increased productivity, income, employment opportunities, and food security. Additionally, the study investigates the
linkages and pathways through which irrigation contributes to poverty reduction, unveiling three identified pathways:
Micro-pathway, Meso-pathway, and Macro-pathway.
The findings highlight the complexities of the relationship between irrigation and poverty, emphasizing the need to
consider diverse factors such as agroclimatic conditions, institutional settings, and equity in land distribution. While the
study recognizes the overall positive influence of irrigation on poverty, the correlation analysis suggests that direct
impacts on poverty reduction may vary in specific contexts. The study concludes by emphasizing tailored strategies and
supportive conditions, including equitable land access, integrated water resource management, and modern production
technologies, as essential for maximizing the anti-poverty impacts of irrigation in urban centers.
