Guidance And Counseling As Promoters Of Students’ Discipline In Secondary Schools In Selected Secondary schools In Ntungamo Municipality. (issue 4)
This study aimed to investigate the role of guidance and counseling in promoting students' discipline within secondary
schools in Ntungamo Municipality, Uganda. Maintaining discipline is important for learning outcomes but can be
challenging, especially during adolescence. Guidance and counseling services provide support for students' personal
social development and may help address issues leading to misconduct. A cross-sectional research design utilizing
both quantitative and qualitative methods was employed. A sample of 40 students and 10 teachers from 4 randomly
selected schools participated in the study between March and May 2023. Students completed a questionnaire to assess
counseling exposure and perceptions of guidance influence on behavior. Teachers took part in in-depth interviews to
offer perspectives on disciplinary trends and counseling impacts. The quantitative findings revealed a moderate
positive correlation between frequency of counseling engagement and self-reported student discipline. Qualitative
data generated richer insights into specific guidance strategies employed, such as individual sessions, mentorship
programs and life skills training. Teachers observed declines in infractions like tardiness, disrespect and substance use
coinciding with upgraded counseling provision over the last year. The study shown some of the issues that teachers
refer to the teacher counsellor, majority refer cases of sexual relationship (40.2%), followed by social problems in
home and at school (13.4%), laziness amongst students (13.4%), absenteeism (6.7%), cheating in examinations
(6.7%), sneaking out of school (6.7%), truancy and students not keen in their academic work (6.7%) and when student
decline to take the punishment given. School administrators should sensitize parents and introduce them to the idea of
guidance and counselling since some of the disciplinary problems faced by students emanates from family factors.
