Influence of Demographic Factors on Students' Academic Performance of Selected Government Aided Secondary Schools in Kapchorwa District, Uganda
This study investigated the factors influencing students' academic performance in selected government-aided
secondary schools in Kapchorwa District, Uganda. It explores the influence of demographic factors (age, gender, and
marital status) on the students' academic outcomes. A mixed-methods approach, involving both quantitative and
qualitative data collection, was employed to gather insights from students, teachers, and school administrators. Data
analysis revealed that younger students tend to perform better academically than older students due to fewer external
responsibilities. Additionally, male students showed a slight academic advantage over female students, though this
gap can be largely attributed to socio-cultural expectations rather than inherent ability. The research concluded that
demographic factors play a critical role in shaping academic outcomes. The study recommended targeted interventions
for older students, gender-sensitive support for females, and finally, the study highlights the need for further research
on the impact of external support systems and mental health on students’ academic performance
