Relationship Between Early Marriages And Retention Rates Of Girls In Primary Schools In Uganda: A Case Of Namayingo Town Council, Namayingo District, Uganda
The study assessed the effects of early marriage on the educational performance and retention rates of girls in primary
schools in Namayingo Town council, Namayingo District, Uganda. A total of one hundred and ninety one (191) girls
participated. The research instruments used to collect data for the study were questionnaire and interview guide. The
study used quantitative data analysis technique and qualitative data analysis technique. Reliability of the instrument was
established with the use of pilot study and the value of 0.92 and validity was determined through face and content validity
with a CVI value of 0.84. Two hundred and eighty-seven (287) sets of questionnaire were administered to the boys but
the number of respondents who returned the filled questionnaire were one hundred and ninety one (191) giving the overall
return rate as 67%. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics including Pearson correlation
coefficients and regression analysis with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The finding indicated
that early marriage had a significant relationship with the educational performance among girls in primary schools in
Namayingo Town council. The study concluded that early marriage affects the educational performance and retention
rates of girls in primary schools in Namayingo Town council. The study therefore recommended that government should
create awareness for the parent regarding the effects of early marriage on the educational performance and retention rates
of girls in primary schools; community should support girl child to increase the retention rates in primary schools.
