Examining The Impact Of Culture On Tourism Development In Uganda: A Case Study Of Buganda Kasubi Tombs In Kcca Rubaga Division

This study examined the impact of culture on tourism development in Uganda, focusing specifically on the Buganda
Kasubi Tombs in the Rubaga Division of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA). The research investigated how
cultural heritage sites contributed to the growth of tourism, enhancing local economies, preserving cultural identity,
and fostering community involvement. A mixed-methods approach was utilized, combining qualitative and
quantitative data collected from 180 respondents, including stakeholders from the government, private sector, cultural
institutions, and local communities. The findings revealed that the Buganda Kasubi Tombs played a significant role
in attracting both local and international tourists, contributing to increased tourism revenue, job creation, and the
preservation of Buganda's heritage. However, challenges such as underfunding, inadequate infrastructure, and limited
marketing efforts were identified as key barriers that hindered the full potential of cultural tourism at the site. In
particular, inadequate infrastructure and limited promotional efforts were seen as factors that prevented the tombs
from reaching a wider audience. The study also emphasized the importance of participatory governance, digital
marketing platforms, and enhanced collaboration among cultural and tourism authorities in addressing these
challenges. Results indicated that improved marketing strategies and infrastructural development could significantly
boost the site's attractiveness to international tourists. Additionally, there was a strong recommendation for local
communities to become more involved in the management and promotion of cultural heritage sites. The research
concludes that culture plays a pivotal role in tourism development, and strategic investments in cultural heritage sites
like the Buganda Kasubi Tombs can enhance Uganda's competitiveness in the global tourism market.
