Assessing The Role Of Domestic Tourism On The Development Of The Tourism Sector In Uganda: A Case Study Of Lake Mburo National Park

This study was conducted to assess the contribution of domestic tourism to the development of the tourism sector
in Uganda, with a specific focus on Lake Mburo National Park. The study established that domestic tourism played
a crucial role in attracting local tourists who eventually visited other sites, generating local revenue used to fund
the tourism industry, attracting local investors in the hospitality sector, and promoting local cultural heritage,
which in turn drew foreign tourists and enhanced the national tourism sector. However, the study also identified
several challenges that hindered the growth of domestic tourism at Lake Mburo National Park. These challenges
included the high cost of domestic tourism for local people, insecurity concerns, poor road networks, and negative
attitudes among local communities toward the significance of domestic tourism.
A descriptive research design was employed, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative approaches to data
collection and analysis. Data was gathered using structured questionnaires and interviews with key stakeholders,
including tourists, local business owners, and park officials. Secondary sources such as reports from the Uganda
Tourism Board and the Uganda Wildlife Authority were also reviewed to complement the primary data. The
collected data was analyzed using statistical and thematic analysis techniques. The findings indicated a significant
correlation between domestic tourism and the development of the tourism sector. Domestic tourism was found to
be instrumental in revenue generation, fostering local investment, and promoting cultural heritage. However, its
full potential remained untapped due to barriers such as high costs, inadequate infrastructure, security concerns,
and limited awareness among local communities. The study concluded that while domestic tourism contributed
substantially to the growth of Uganda’s tourism sector, its impact could be significantly enhanced by addressing
the existing challenges. The study recommended improving security and road networks to make domestic tourism
more accessible and attractive, implementing strong digital and non-digital marketing strategies, and reducing the
costs associated with domestic tourism to encourage more local participation. Additionally, it was suggested that
officials at Lake Mburo National Park should benchmark successful tourism strategies from other countries to
enhance efficiency and service delivery. The government was also urged to provide greater financial support and
strengthen security measures to foster a more conducive environment for domestic tourism growth.
