Culture Of Political Succession And Its Implication On The Socio-Economic Development In Uganda: A Case Study Of Obongi District Local Government.

This study was limited to analyzing the relationship between politics of succession and the socio-economic
transformation of in Uganda but with focus in Obongi district local government. The study found out that there are
various ways through which politics of succession affect the socio-economic transformation in Obongi district local
government and these included, relatives in power tend to favor their people as they offer them job opportunities,
relatives in power tend to channel resources and good services to their areas, people who inherit power tend to lobby
for their areas for socio-economic transformation in terms of good policies and empowerment alleviation programs,
politics of succession leads to regional development by those in power towards their home regions. The study found
out that there are various way factors which affect the voting behaviors of the voters in Obongi district local
government and these included, voters consider ethnicity while choosing their favorite candidates, voters consider
economic factors such as money to vote for their candidates, voters consider religion similar to theirs while voting
their leaders. The study found out a number of challenges associated with politics of succession in Obongi district
local government and these included, politics of inheritance is associated with corruption inform of favor and
nepotism, politics of inheritance is associated with gross human rights violation to protect the ruling class, politics of
inheritance is associated with sectarianism which discriminates others outside the ruling circle, politics of inheritance
is associated with discrimination in terms of job opportunities and service delivery, politics of inheritance is associated
with inter-ethnic conflicts and may lead to a genocide. The study found a relationship politics of succession/inheritance
and socio-economic development of rural communities though the nature of development is discriminatory among
communities and regions. Capacity building is lacking at the grass root levels for effective enforcement of democratic
governance. Community engagement is very essential in enhancing people’s participation in advocating for
democratic governance at the grass root level and understanding that politics is based on the ability for service delivery
rather than promoting sectarianism.
