Drug Addiction On Child School Drop Out In Uganda. A Case Study Ssenso High School Wakiso
The study focused on determining the effects of drug addiction on the child school dropouts among youth in the
selected school. A mixed-method approach involving both qualitative and quantitative techniques was employed to
ensure the collection of comprehensive and valid data. The study targeted 140 individuals, from which a sample of
50 respondents was selected through purposive and systematic random sampling methods. Data collection was done
using standardized questionnaires and was later analyzed using SPSS and STATA software. The findings revealed
that both male and female respondents actively participated in the study, indicating that the data collected was
gender-balanced and suitable for informed decision-making. The respondents, being generally well-educated,
provided mature and credible insights, making the information collected trustworthy and representative of the actual
situation in the community. The study established that alcohol and marijuana consumption significantly contributed
to increased rates of school dropout among the youth. It was also discovered that while many individuals in Ssenjo
High School and the surrounding community were aware of the harmful effects of drug abuse, no serious
interventions or research had been implemented to address the issue. Drug addiction, particularly involving
substances such as alcohol and marijuana, has a direct and negative influence on school retention among children.
The study recommended the implementation of targeted civic education programs for parents and guardians to equip
them with the knowledge and strategies to educate their children about the dangers of drug abuse. It further
recommended that schools, local authorities, and NGOs work collaboratively to initiate preventive and rehabilitative
programs aimed at reducing school dropouts due to substance abuse.
