Effect Of Public Transportation Infrastructure Investment On Urban Economic Development In Tourism Sector In Makindye Division, Kampala District
The study examined the relationship between transportation infrastructure investment and urban economic development in
Tourism Sector in Makindye division, Kampala district. It was guided by objectives; to examine the role of public
transportation infrastructure investment in Makindye division, Kampala district, to establish the level of urban economic
development in tourism sector in Makindye division, Kampala district and to establish the relationship between public
transportation infrastructure investment and urban economic development in tourism sector in Makindye division,
Kampala district. The study used a cross sectional research design and a sample of 171 respondents from which 130
participated in the study. Questionnaires and interview guide were used to collect data and data was analysed using
descriptive and correlation analyses with the help of Statistical Package for Social Sciences. The study concluded that
public transportation investment in Makindye Division effectively reduced travel times. The study concluded that urban
tourism development in Makindye Division was evident through improvements in the quality of built infrastructure, such
as roads, public transportation, utilities, and telecommunications. The Pearson correlation coefficient indicated a moderate
positive relationship between public transportation infrastructure and urban tourism development, further reinforcing the
conclusion that as public transportation infrastructure improved, urban economic development is likely to increase. The
study recommended that Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Works and
Transport should prioritize expanding transit-oriented development projects around major public transport hubs in
Makindye Division. Urban planners should conduct community consultations to better understand local needs and build
support for the integration of public transport with mixed-use developments. Public transportation infrastructure projects
that stimulate local economic activity, particularly in construction and manufacturing should be continued and expanded.
The government, through the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development (MoFPED), should allocate
funds to prioritize large-scale transport projects that employ local labor, providing job opportunities in the construction
and transit operations sectors.
