Effect Of Single Parenting On Academic Performance Of Secondary School Students: A Case Of Mukono District

This study investigated the effect of single parenting on the academic performance of secondary school students in
Mukono District, Uganda. The research aimed at assessing how various factors associated with single parenting, such
as economic stability, parental education level, emotional support, and parental involvement, influence students’
academic outcomes. Using logistic regression analysis, the study found that economic stability significantly affected
academic performance, with an odds ratio of 1.45 (p = 0.012), indicating that higher income levels in single-parent
households increased the likelihood of students achieving above-average academic results. Additionally, parental
education level positively impacted student performance (odds ratio = 1.30, p = 0.028), suggesting that more educated
parents are more likely to foster an academic environment that supports student success. Emotional support from single
parents was found to be the strongest predictor of academic performance, with an odds ratio of 3.00 (p = 0.000),
highlighting the critical role of emotional encouragement and stability in a child's academic achievement. Parental
involvement also had a positive effect, with an odds ratio of 2.30 (p = 0.000), underscoring the importance of active
engagement in the child’s educational process. On the other hand, household size and student age did not show
significant effects on academic performance. The study concluded that single parenting has a profound effect on
academic outcomes, with economic stability, parental education, and emotional support being the most influential
factors. Recommendations include initiatives to enhance parental involvement, provide emotional support programs,
and improve the economic well-being of single-parent households to support better academic achievement for students.
