Relationship Between Stakeholder Engagement And Sustainability Of Youth Livelihood Projects In Bigodi Town Council, Kamwenge District

This study aimed at examining the relationship between stakeholder engagement and the sustainability of youth
livelihood projects in Bigodi Town Council, Kamwenge District. A descriptive cross-sectional survey design
was employed, allowing for data collection at a single point in time. Both quantitative and qualitative research
approaches were utilized to provide a comprehensive understanding of the subject. The study targeted 350
stakeholders, including youth beneficiaries, community leaders, government officials, and representatives
from non-governmental organizations (NGOs). A sample was determined using Yamane’s (1967) formula,
and a stratified random sampling technique was applied to ensure fair representation of different stakeholder
groups. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and key informant interviews. The questionnaire
comprised closed-ended and Likert-scale questions measuring stakeholder engagement dimensions such as
participation, collaboration, decision-making, and resource mobilization, alongside project sustainability
indicators like financial viability, continuity, and community ownership. Key informant interviews were
conducted with local government officials, project coordinators, and NGO representatives to gain qualitative
insights. The reliability of the questionnaire was tested through a pilot study, yielding a Cronbach’s Alpha
coefficient of 0.78, indicating acceptable internal consistency. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS
and STATA, with descriptive statistics summarizing demographic characteristics and key study variables.
Findings indicated that stakeholder engagement significantly influenced the sustainability of youth livelihood
projects. Respondents acknowledged that engagement enhanced project relevance, built stakeholder
ownership, and contributed to long-term sustainability. However, some participants expressed uncertainty or
disagreement regarding the extent of its impact. Key informant interviews further highlighted the role of
stakeholder consultations in monitoring and evaluation, resource mobilization, and decision-making. The
study concluded that effective stakeholder engagement was essential for ensuring the sustainability of youth
livelihood projects. It recommended strengthening participatory decision-making processes, increasing
awareness of stakeholder roles, and enhancing collaboration between government agencies, NGOs, and
community members to improve project outcomes.
