Role Of Non-Governmental Organizations And Implementation Of Human Rights In Uganda
This study aimed to establish the contributions of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the
implementation of human rights in selected NGOs in Uganda. A descriptive correlation design was employed,
integrating both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. The study population consisted of 310
respondents drawn from Action for Development, Foundation for Human Rights Initiative, and Citizens Coalition
for Electoral Democracy in Uganda. A sample of 175 respondents was selected using Slovene’s formula, and data
collection was conducted using questionnaires and interviews. Data analysis involved descriptive and inferential
statistics, utilizing the Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS). The findings indicated that the overall
advocacy role of NGOs in Uganda was rated poorly, with a mean score of 2.46 (SD = 0.82). Sensitization of
masses on human rights respect (M = 2.70, SD = 0.89) and advocacy for equal opportunities (M = 2.54, SD =
0.90) were rated as good. However, NGOs' influence in ensuring media freedom (M = 2.29, SD = 0.77) and
agitation for the right to life (M = 2.34, SD = 0.92) were found to be weak. The study concluded that while NGOs
play a critical role in human rights implementation, their effectiveness is hindered by limited advocacy impact in
certain areas. It is recommended that NGOs strengthen their advocacy strategies, engage more with policymakers,
and seek increased funding to enhance their human rights implementation efforts. Future studies should explore
the challenges affecting NGO advocacy effectiveness in Uganda.
