Teaching Practices, Teaching Facilities, Study Environment And Student Performance In Business Technical Vocational And Education Institutions In Uganda

In an era of increasing reforms to improve the education sector, the student performance in Business Technical and
Vocational Education (BTVET) institutions has been every one’s concern as educationists continue to debate what
could be the real drivers influencing its effectiveness. This study was therefore initiated with a view of examining the
relationship between teaching practices, teaching facilities, and study environment and student performance in
BTVET institutions in Uganda. It was guided by the objectives of; identifying the relationship between teaching
practices and student performance, establishing the relationship between teaching facilities and student performance
as well as ascertaining the mediating influence of study environment on the relationship between teaching practices,
teaching facilities and student performance. The study also examined the effect of teaching practices, teaching
facilities, and study environment and student performance within BTVET institutions in Uganda. The study used a
cross sectional research design with a sample size of 194 respondents including a registrar and a principal drawn from
97 BTVET institutions in Uganda. A regressive analysis was used to assess the predictive potential of teaching
practices, teaching facilities and study environment on student performance. To ensure validity and reliability of the
instrument, the researcher sought guidance from experts and supervisors in the field of student performance. The
findings revealed a positive and significant relationship between; teaching practices and student performance, teaching
facilities and student performance as well as study environment and student performance. Moreover, the study showed
that a combination of teaching practices, teaching facilities and study environment are influential in predicting student
performance outcomes within BTVET institutions. Therefore, management of BTVET institutions in Uganda should
not take these factors lightly if they want to improve the quality of education standards and student performance in
particular. Based on these findings, the researcher recommended that teachers in BTVET institutions should focus on
designing suitable practices such as friendly methods of instruction, offering practical explanations and undertaking
lesson planning as such practices can improve students’ comprehension of the material taught in class leading to
acquisition of knowledge. Similarly, BTVET institutions should improve spacing, promote a conducive study
environment and work towards improving the quality of teaching facilities by use of learning guides such as charts
and pictorials, restocking textbooks and renovating physical facilities like buildings.
