The effect of Paid-time-off policies on employee performance in selected secondary schools in Mbarara City, Uganda.

This study investigated the impact of paid-time-off (PTO) policies on employee performance in secondary schools in
Mbarara City, Uganda. A total of 160 employees from five selected schools participated in a survey, providing both
qualitative and quantitative data on various components of PTO policies, including annual leave flexibility, maternity
leave, the ability to have children while employed, family emergency leave, and work-life balance. Descriptive
statistics were used to analyze the responses, revealing that employees generally agreed that PTO policies positively
affected their work performance, with means above 3.5 for most components. The highest agreement was observed
regarding the ability to take time off for family emergencies (mean = 4.18), the provision of maternity leave (mean =
4.09), and permission for children at work (mean = 4.11). However, variability in perceptions was noted, particularly
concerning annual leave flexibility and work-life balance, where high standard deviations indicated diverse
experiences. Correlation analysis showed a very strong positive relationship (Pearson correlation = 0.954, p = 0.000)
between PTO policies and employee performance, suggesting that improved satisfaction with PTO policies is linked
to higher employee performance. The study concluded that PTO policies significantly contribute to a supportive
workplace culture, which positively affects employee well-being and job performance. However, there is a need to
address disparities in how these policies are experienced across different employees, particularly in terms of flexibility
and work-life balance. The study recommended that secondary schools offer a diverse range of PTO options, actively
promote their use, and regularly evaluate their effectiveness through employee feedback.
