The Relationship between Gender Inclusive Economic Policies and Women’s Economic Welfare In Uganda: A Case Study Of Uwep In Kakiri Sub-County In Wakiso District Local Government
This study was limited to the impact created by gender inclusive economic policies on women’s economic
empowerment in in Uganda but with focus in Kakiri sub county, Wakiso District Local Government. The study
found out that there are various ways how UWEP affect women’s economic empowerment in Kakiri sub-county
and these included, women receive start-up capital from UWEP, women have been trained and equipped with
skills for enterprise growth in UWEP, UWEP helps women add value to their product and market. The study
found out that there are various challenges facing the implementation of UWEP in Kakiri sub-county and these
included, there is corruption & discrimination in accessing UWEP finances, there is a lot of political interferences
affecting the UWEP, The program is not well-funded by government, there is negative attitude by the local against
the program and lack of stakeholders cooperation and understanding of the purpose of the program. The study
found out a number of measures of enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the implementation of UWEP
in the empowerment of women in Kakiri sub-county and these included, there is need for more funding to improve
UWEP, there is need to train and skill women before receiving the funds for UWEP, there is need for civic
education and sensitization to change people’s mind set to support the program success and cooperation of all
stakeholders including the beneficiaries and the local leaders to understand the purpose of the program. The study
found out a correlation between gender inclusive economic policies on women’s economic empowerment in in
Uganda. The government should increase its sensitization mechanisms to promote awareness about the importance
of these UWEP in the community as partners in development but also extend financial support to them. There is
need for formidable legal environment for the effective proliferation, operationalization and expansion of UWEP
in the country especially in rural areas.
