The Role Of Journalism In Promoting National Development: A Case Study Of Vision Group Kampala.

This study was limited to evaluating the role of the journalism in promoting national development in Uganda by
focusing on Vision Group in Kampala district. The study found out that there are various roles played by
journalism in promoting national development and these included, the media investigates & reports about human
rights violation, the media reports on corruption practices, the media engages the different stakeholders about
national development discourses, through media show on TVs and radios, the media engages the different
stakeholders about various issues of national development. The study found out that there are various challenges
facing the journalism in the promotion of national development and these included, there is limited media freedom
in Uganda and many journalists get hunted, there is little facilitation for media personalities hindering their role,
there is politicization of the media role which hinders its operation, there is political interference in the role of the
media as some politicians perceive media as being anti-government when they talk about government corruption.
The study found out a number of measures of enhancing the role of journalism in promoting national development
and these included, there is need to facilitate the media personalities for better reporting on human rights violation,
there is need for more conducive media space to enable well balanced information, there is need for more training
to enhance the capacity of the personalities in reporting about national development plans and projects in Uganda.
Media organizations should collaborate and engage stakeholders for necessary support, there is need for the
establishment or growth of a powerful journalists association or union both of which currently exist, but lack
cohesion and strength. There is need for increased media freedom in the country. The 1995 Constitution
guarantees freedom of expression, but some legal and extralegal mechanisms restrict media in Uganda.
