WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH WORKER PERFORMANCE IN UGANDA: A CASE OF KILEMBE HOSPITAL, KASESI DISTRICT, UGANDA (issue 8)

The study examined the effect of work environment on performance of health workers in Uganda using a case
of Kilembe Hospital. The study was guided by three (03) specific objectives namely; to examine the effect of
supervision support on health worker performance at Kilembe Hospital; to investigate the effect of workplace
safety on health worker performance at Kilembe Hospital and to assess the effect of learning opportunities on
health worker performance at Kilembe Hospital. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey research design
with mixed methods approach. A sample size of 152 respondents was considered for the study, 130 respondents
participated, giving a response rate of 85.5%. The content validity index was calculated from, the questionnaire
and it was 0.94 while the computed Cronbach’s alpha coefficient is 0.922 which is above 0.7 considered
indicative of acceptable internal consistency therefore the questionnaire was deemed reliable. For qualitative
data, to ensure consistency the KII and documentary review were guided by the research objective and question
to keep the study focused. On the first objective, the study discovered that supervisors are sometimes not
accessible at Kilembe hospital. The study therefore, recommends the need for Ministry of health to recruit more
health workers since the study discovered workload as one of the major reasons where supervisors are
sometimes not accessible. On the second objective, the key finding was thatthere wasinadequacy of ppes at
Kilembe hospital which exposes health workers to risks of contracting diseases from patients and it was also
found out that some of the hospital equipment were not functioning properly. This demotivates health workers
and hence deters them from executing their mandate effectively. The study therefore, recommends the need for
Ministry of Health to advocate for budget increment in order to enable them supply enough ppes to hospital and
the need for Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Health to partner with Civil Society Organization to
fund some of the health budget for example repairing of hospital equipment and finally, on the third objective,
the key finding was that at Kilembe, staff promotions are neither linked to performance nor to attainment of
academic qualifications, periodic refresher courses are irregular at the facility and health worker training at
Kilembe hospital is not based on needs assessment which render some of the training irrelevant. The study
therefore recommends the need for Ministry of Health to ensure that promotion of health worker is linked to
performance and academic qualification and the need for Ministry of Health to carry out training needs
assessment for health workers in order to identify the knowledge gaps in order for them to organize meaningful
training.
