Evaluating the Influence of Communities Towards Waste Management. A Case Study of Namungoona Parish.

Abstract

The study was all about evaluating the influence of communities towards waste management, A case study of Namungoona parish. The study was guided by three objectives that is; to find out the role of community involvement in waste management of Namungoona parish, to examine the challenges faced in waste management in Namungoona parish, and finally to find out strategies that will be put in place to ensure effective waste management in Namungoona parish. The study sampled 60 members of Namungoona that included the households, the market vendors, the commercial residents, street vendors and the industrialized area which were selected using both random and purposive sampling. Primary data was collected using questionnaires and structured interviews while secondary data was collected from the libraries, and journals. Collected data was coded, checked for completeness and summarized in tables. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data with the help of the Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS). The study revealed that local community participate in solid waste management and to reduce the effect of uncollected solid waste. The community play a big role as the result of their involvement in the waste management in Namugoona parish such as community participates in solid waste collection, offering of dustbins for garbage collections and transportation of SW from the source to the skips and they voluntarily give away their vehicles to transport garbage. Further the challenges faced by community in waste management were identified as lack of enough financial resources, lack of Education and awareness among the local community and infrastructure issues among others. The study findings also revealed that strategies such as local community participation, community cleanup exercise, solid waste re-use mechanism are essential and solid management and finally study recommended that the division authority should explain to the community members the other services that utilize the taxes besides solid waste management, communities should continuously be mobilized to fully participate in all activities related to solid waste management and Central government should increase funding towards solid waste management
