Fishing And Economic Growth In Wakiso District: A Case Study Of Lake Edward

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between fishing activities and economic growth at the Kasenyi fish landing site along Lake Victoria, Wakiso District, Uganda. The study aimed to determine the extent of fishing activities, the level of economic growth, and the relationship between the two variables. Using a multiple linear regression analysis, key factors influencing fishing activities and economic growth were identified. The regression model included independent variables such as the number of fishing boats, fishing hours, availability of modern fishing equipment, employment in the fishing sector, and infrastructure development. The results of the regression analysis revealed that the number of fishing boats (β = 0.42, p < 0.01) and fishing hours (β = 0.36, p < 0.05) had a positive and significant effect on the extent of fishing activities at Kasenyi. Furthermore, the availability of modern fishing equipment (β = 0.29, p < 0.05) and infrastructure improvements, including road access (β = 0.33, p < 0.01), were also significant predictors of the level of economic growth in the region. The analysis showed that as fishing activities increased, there was a corresponding rise in income generation, job creation, and overall economic development. The findings emphasized the importance of fishing as a central economic activity for the local community. The study concludes that fishing activities at Kasenyi are strongly associated with economic growth, with several key factors contributing to this relationship. The study recommends investments in modern fishing equipment, sustainable fishing practices, and infrastructure development. Furthermore, creating employment opportunities, promoting skills development, and improving market access are essential for enhancing the economic benefits derived from fishing. Strengthening policy support and fostering community engagement will be crucial for ensuring the long-term success of the fishing sector and its continued contribution to the region's economic development.
