Radio Broadcast Media and Its Impact On the Implementation of Government Programs in Communities. A Case Study of Top Radio, Kampala

Wamani Keneth, Omedo Vincent

Abstract

This study aimed at assessing the impact of community radio broadcasting on the implementation of government programs and its role in community development, focusing on Top Radio in Kampala, Uganda. Using multiple logistic regression analysis, the study revealed that frequent radio listenership significantly increased participation in government programs, with a 23% higher likelihood of participation among regular listeners. Radio broadcasts were found to positively influence community development, especially in health education (31%) and poverty reduction initiatives. However, challenges such as limited radio access (38% of rural households lacked radio access), poor signal reception, and content relevance were identified as significant barriers. The study concluded that while community radio contributes to public awareness and engagement in government initiatives, these operational obstacles hinder its full potential. Recommendations include expanding radio infrastructure, improving content relevance, fostering government-radio collaborations, and addressing economic barriers to radio access. Strengthening capacity-building efforts for radio stations was also suggested to enhance content quality.
