Abstract

This study comes as a result of the effect of youth unemployment on the crime rate in Mityana District and Uganda as a country. The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between youth unemployment and crime rates, the causes of unemployment among the youth and its impacts on crime rates, and the aspiring strategies that are being put forward in order to address the problems caused by youth unemployment in Mityana District. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was used of 252 respondents who included local leaders and youths in Mityana District. The study findings revealed that there are a number of socioeconomic factors that account for youth unemployment and these include among others: The poor University education, the mismatch between skills and the labour market, the theoretical education curriculum, Ruralurban migration resulting into high population growth rates in the area. The study concluded that youth unemployment and its impact on crime rates is high at around 60 % and the most affected are the males and because the population is growing very fast, provision of social services is difficult given the low tax contribution. The study further concluded that whereas some people say many youths in Mityana District are voluntarily unemployed, the fact is that the problem of unemployment is structural resulting from a deficiency in demand for labour in the labour market as some of the youth who are educated complained of low industrialization and discrimination in the labour market and the formal sector which explains they’re under employment or unemployment in the informal sector. The study recommended that to fight the problem of youth unemployment, there should be efforts put in place to among other things; Control rural-urban migration that results into high population growth research.miu.ac.ug/publications 857 METROPOLITAN JOURNAL OF BUSINESS & ECONOMICS (MJBE) ISSN 1813-4238 Vol. 2 Issue 5, August - 2023, Pages: 857-874 Make reviews and redesign Uganda’s education system Avail credit facilities to address young peoples’ financial constraints that limit entrepreneurship.
