Evaluation of Safe Water and Sanitation Provision. A Case of Amaizi Marungi Project in Rwanyamahembe Sub-County-Mbarara District

Abstract

Water is necessary for all life on Earth. Humans can survive for several weeks without food, but for only a few days without water. Therefore, provision of water and sanitation is very critical to improve the socio –economic livelihoods of people. As a result, many players have come on board to increase the rate of water and sanitation in Uganda. Amaizi Marungi project is one of the initiatives that have been established to improve water and sanitation provision. This study was intended to evaluate the contribution of Amaizi Marungi project in water and sanitation provision. The study was carried out to identify the contribution of Amaizi Marungi in provision of water and sanitation in Rwanyamahembe sub county, find out the problems faced by Amaizi Marungi Project in water and sanitation provision and to establish measures in place to address the challenges faced by Amaizi marungi in water and sanitation provision. The study covered 50 respondents who included community members, local leaders and employees of Amaizi Marungi project. Simple random sampling was used to select community members while purposive sampling technique was used to select local leaders and Amaizi Marungi employees. Interviews and documentary analysis were used in data analysis. The study found out that due to the establishment of the Amaizi Marungi project in the area, the number of people accessing safe water has increased compared to the period before the water project. The introduced water project has led to reduced distance and increased safe water sources. The water project has to a greater extent achieved its objectives of increasing access to safe water, improving health and sanitation and people’s standards of living as well as increasing household incomes. In this regard, the number of incomes generating activities in the area has increased tremendously especially due to the efficient utilization of the saved time and energy hence increased incomes.
