Logose Irene, Kabanda Richard

Abstract

The study examined the influence of conflict management on employee performance in Manafwa District Local Government, Uganda. A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was employed, collecting data from 156 employees across various departments through structured questionnaires and interviews. The results revealed that conflict management strategies significantly influenced employee performance (r = 0.718, p < 0.01). Specifically, collaborative conflict resolution demonstrated the strongest positive impact on performance (mean = 4.12/5), followed by compromise strategies (mean = 3.87/5). The study found that 63.5% of employees experienced workplace conflicts regularly, with role ambiguity (42.3%) and resource scarcity (31.4%) being the primary sources. Poor conflict management led to reduced productivity (71.8% of cases), increased absenteeism (58.3%), and lower job satisfaction (67.9%). Conversely, effective conflict resolution improved team cohesion (78.2%), enhanced innovation (64.1%), and increased task completion rates (73.7%). The study concluded that conflict management significantly influenced employee performance in Manafwa District Local Government, with collaborative and compromise approaches yielding superior outcomes. It was recommended that the district develop comprehensive conflict management policies, train managers in conflict resolution techniques, establish formal grievance mechanisms, and promote open communication channels to enhance organizational performance.
